This video shows how easy it is to create durable, highly detailed molds with today’s modern urethane plastics. With these molds you can cast parts using more urethane or other plastics to create many duplicate items.
There are many uses for molds when working with plastics. Whether you are making set pieces for the local live theatre, or you are making tiny models for a train set, creating a mold will allow you to easily and quickly reproduce the same part over and over with minimal fuss.
One of the ways a hobbyist can create molds most easily is with liquid urethane resins. These resins typically have two components that you mix together per the maufacturer’s instructions and after a period of time, the resin cures into a hard, durable form, perfect for molding other parts.
This video shows how you can use Freeman Fast-Cast non-settling resins to create a mold and then use the mold to make another identical part.
If you are interested, you can get more information on the Freeman Fast-Cast resins. Also, if you want to learn more about mold-making, one book I found very enjoyable and informative is the Prop Builder’s Molding and Casting Handbook. It covers many techniques and offers tips from people who’ve spent lots of time making molds and casting items.
